Once upon a time, there was a girl named Keren, who tripped and fell down the stairs not once, not twice, but 3 times in a single year. She found herself in a cast, walking with crutches again and again and again. As she continued to rest and recover, she told her friend, “I’m too busy to see a physiotherapist! I don’t have the time! Who’s going to find me the time?” A young man, eavesdropping on the conversation, turns around and yells to her, “Go see a physiotherapist!” … and that is the story of how Keren and Mat met for the first time.
After a few extended chats online and few extended car rides, their first official date was an evening enjoying the Canada Day fireworks at Mel Lastman Square. In case you didn’t know, Keren LOVES fireworks!
One year later, on Canada Day 2011, they travelled downtown to Woodbine Park to see a spectacular fireworks display. Mat bought a pack of sparklers and after the show, lit one for Keren to play with — she was enamoured! As she was distracted, Mat quickly lit a circle of firework sparklers all around them, turned to her, got down on one knee, and asked her to marry him. She yelled, “Whoa! Look at that rock!”, which in Keren-speak, means “Yes!”
